The Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS) and the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) presented the 2022 European Caucus on China "Re-calibrating European China Policy" on 12th October in Berlin.

For our annual flagship conference, we brought together a diverse group of high-level policymakers and experts from all over Europe to discuss challenges and opportunities with regard to their future engagement with China.

The event began with a lively panel discussion on Europe-China dependencies and the lessons learned from the relationship with Russia, followed by smaller group debates on the aftermath to the Party Congress, joint research and innovation in a climate of competition, tensions in the Taiwan strait and feminist foreign policy. The final plenary session focused on whether the EU can compete with China in the Global South.

Please note that the event was by invitation only.

The European Caucus on China is a collaborative project between MERICS and ECFR. The two-year project, generously supported by Stiftung Mercator, is designed to extend the China debate to stakeholders across Europe and build capacity at all levels of society to pro-actively drive debates on and exchanges with China.
